What is the law of attraction?

The law of attraction is really just a newish term for a concept that’s been around a long time. You’ve doubtless heard of other similar concepts like:

  • The power of positive thinking
  • Visualization
  • Affirmations
  • Mesmerism

The Law of attraction comes from the New Thought movement which sprung up in the US in the years leading up to around the time of the Civil War.

Phineas Quimby is widely recognized as the founder of the movement and the concept of the law of attraction in a general sense. While he was not a doctor by trade, he became known for healing people essentially through hypnosis.

In short, he made them believe he could heal them, and as a result, many were claimed to have been healed.

As with the other belief systems I listed above, the law of attraction basically affirms that everything in the universe is energy, including our thoughts. As such, we can naturally attract or repel anything based on our thoughts. So in a way, the movement is rooted in both science and physics.

As the Declaration of Principals in the New Thought Movement puts it,

“our mental states are carried forward into manifestation and become our experience in daily living”.

So if we are constantly griping that our life sucks, that negative energy we are giving out will naturally attract more negative energy. So, our statements become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

BUT, if we visualize ourselves living a happy, abundant, and rewarding life of our dreams, we can manifest that into reality. Or so the theory goes.

How does the law of attraction work?

The law of attraction is a popular concept that suggests we attract into our lives whatever we focus on, whether positive or negative. It is based on the idea that the universe is made up of energy, and our thoughts and emotions emit vibrations that attract corresponding energies.

Have you ever started the process of buying a new car and gotten fixated on one particular make and model only to then seemingly notice those cars everywhere? And most likely you never noticed them in the past.

That’s because we tend to get what we focus our positive energy on.

To put it simply, the law of attraction works by focusing your thoughts and emotions on the things you want to attract into your life, whether it’s love, success, wealth, or happiness. By doing so, you send out positive vibrations into the universe, which can then attract similar energies back to you.

Some key elements of the law of attraction include visualization, positive affirmations, and gratitude.

By visualizing yourself already having the things you desire, repeating positive money affirmations to yourself, and expressing gratitude for what you already have, you can increase the positive energy you emit and therefore increase the likelihood of attracting your desired outcome.

It’s important to note that the law of attraction is not a magic solution to all your problems, and it requires action on your part to achieve your goals. You can’t simply sit back and wait for things to come to you; you must take active steps towards what you want, while maintaining a positive and optimistic attitude.

In summary, the law of attraction suggests that we can attract into our lives whatever we focus on, through the power of our thoughts and emotions. By focusing on positive thoughts, visualizations, affirmations, and gratitude, we can increase our chances of manifesting our desires.

However, action and effort are also necessary to bring our goals to fruition.

Does the law of attraction always work?

If we accept that the basic principals of the law of attraction work, then naturally, we want to know does it always work?

After all, if it were easy, wouldn’t everyone be happily married and millionaires?

The reality of it is the law always works, BUT, we human beings are inherently flawed. We have doubts, insecurities, and bad days. When we let our emotions get the better of us, in those moments, we are working against the law of attraction.

Some of us are also naturally skeptical of things we can’t see and touch, so we may doubt if this even works. The irony is that doubt can actually prevent it from working. If we don’t think something is going to work, our subconscious mind will likely find a way to make that failure happen.

Even worse is that sometimes our limiting beliefs are subconscious. So we may not even be aware of our brain’s attempt to derail our ability to manifest a better life.

So what are some of the steps we can take to help us curb our inner critic?

  • Don’t play the victim – Bad things happen to good people. Don’t think you can avoid it and don’t be a martyr. Something happened you wish hadn’t. Accept it, learn from it, and move on.
  • Be all in – 110% – Push doubts and skepticism aside. There are a LOT of things in this universe we know work that we can’t prove definitively. Believe it will work and focus on visualizing where you want to be
  • Avoid negative statements that are absolute – Avoid negative comments like “this always happens to me!”. Aside from the fact that it’s probably nowhere near true, you WILL attract more of it
  • Be careful who you spend your time with – If all your friends are broke and single guess what you’re more likely to be? Spend time around people who are like the kind of person you want to be, and (more importantly) people who are positive and want to lift you up instead of drag you down
  • Focus on improving your self-esteem – If you battle low self-esteem or struggle with self-confidence, you may struggle to believe you are worthy of manifesting a better life. Get help if needed, but focus on boosting your confidence; you are deserving of a better life!

Many of us get stuck in what is called Repetition Compulsion.

Essentially it’s when negative things happen so often (often when we are kids), that they become familiar. Then, as older and wiser adults, we are drawn to those behaviors despite knowing they aren’t good for us.

It’s like the child of a smoker who sees a parent die of cancer who smokes themselves. If that sounds familiar, just click that link to read my article about it (and what you can do about it).

How do you use the law of attraction for money?

The law of attraction can literally work for anything that positively impacts your life.

If you’re a big nerd like I am, you could almost compare it to “the force” in Star Wars, although you’re not likely to lift your car up in the air.

I also don’t think it works for negative things (like hoping your ex’s new spouse gets hurt).

Remember, everything is energy, and we’re trying to attract positive energy to us. We can’t do that by thinking about bad things.

Now, I’m not naive enough to think that if you just wish you had more money, it would instantly show up in your wallet. No, as with anything else, we have to visualize ourselves doing and living the way we want to live, and the more specific, the better.

So don’t just wish for more money, see yourself doing something and being successful at it.

I, for example, have 4 blogs and while I do currently have a day job, I know the day is coming soon when I can just focus on my online businesses and earn enough money to provide for my family.

But rather than just dream of someday, I set a deadline to make it happen. I track my progress, and I see the steps I need to take to get there. One other cool trick I learned from a cool YouTuber named Drell Jones, is to generate doctored income reports showing the level of income I know I will eventually make.

These aren’t to share with anyone or deceive anyone.

No, they are just for me so I can visualize EXACTLY how much money I know I will be making.

Can you really attract wealth?

Yes, is the short answer.

But many of us do need to change our mindset and attitude about money. After all, in the media, at least, money and abundance, and the people who have that are portrayed as evil. The message is that if we are wealthy, it somehow means we got that way at someone else’s expense.

Now, no doubt there are wealthy people who got that way by cheating and defrauding others.

But EVERYONE who is wealthy doesn’t fall into that category or even the majority of them. Money is a tool; it is neither good nor evil. People are good or evil, and in most cases, not 100% one or the other.

We all deserve to be happy and to live the life of our dreams.

And while money doesn’t bring happiness, it can alleviate many of the things in our lives that can thwart our unhappiness. After all, if you fall behind on bills, lose a job, or get in a car wreck with an uninsured driver, money can go a long way towards relieving the stress you’re likely feeling.

That’s one reason why I, among many others, feel it’s important to have an emergency fund in place so that we don’t fall into despair when a financial setback happens.

How can I practice the law of attraction?

These steps are what I strive to practice every day and they work! Try implementing them into your life and see if you don’t find yourself manifesting more wealth and abundance in your life.

1. Replace expectations with appreciations

If I have a set of expectations for my wife and kids, inevitably, they will fail to live up to them. Or they might be constantly striving to meet my expectations and be miserable doing it.

Instead, while it’s certainly OK to communicate how their actions make me feel if they do something that bothers me, I focus on just appreciating what they do.

I was introduced to this concept by the illustrious Tony Robbins.

It’s not a perfect process (as if anything really is), but when you find yourself feeding the expectation side of things over appreciating their efforts, just stop yourself and recenter and start again.

You will never get to this mythical state of perfection. But you can reduce the frequency with which the negative thoughts come up, and how long it takes you to come back to your appreciation from that state.

There are so many different benefits to being more appreciative in life, and manifesting more abundance is definitely one of them! In a recent article, I actually broke out 35 different benefits of practicing appreciation, including one really surprising statistic about appreciation and lifespan.

Just click the link to read it on my site.

2. Focus on what you want

Under the law of attraction, we naturally attract more of what our brains are focusing on.

We all have those friends and co-workers for whom everything always seems to be going wrong. They lose jobs, relationships, friends, or maybe they’re always broke. Whatever it is, happened once, and they started to play the victim and the martyr and started focusing on those things. And so they happened more often.

Rinse and repeat.

So focus on getting ahead on bills, or maybe it’s getting out of debt, or even paying off your house. See yourself and your significant other on the vacation of your dreams. See it, speak it, believe it, and your brain will strive to find a way to make it happen.

3. Stop negative thinking in its tracks

I addressed this above, but if you don’t think you deserve to be happy or well-off financially, you probably won’t be.

Now, I don’t pretend that I never have a negative thought enter my brain.

No, I do, all the time. But I try and catch myself when I think or say something negative. I stop in my tracks and say (out loud), “no, that’s not what I really mean”. And then I reframe my thoughts (again, out loud) to be positive and a reflection of the energy I really want to attract.

When you slip up (and you will), be kind to yourself, and just practice being present and coming back to your positive thoughts.

4. Visualize yourself doing (and spending) what you will be doing (once the money comes)

Different people work in different ways.

For you, it might be a picture of your dream house you tape on the wall at your desk. Or maybe you print a picture of a dream vacation spot and actually cut out a picture of yourself that you tape on top of the image.

I mentioned above how I make fake financial reports showing the money I know my online businesses will eventually earn me. If you can see it (be specific), you can believe it. Then, you can achieve it.

A vision board, however, can really help.

As you write down your desired life with a husband in the journal and paint a picture on a vision board like this awesome one on Amazon, you bring the unmanifest reality into one aspect of the physical world.

It is an immensely powerful process.

5. Emininate self-doubt

We all have doubts. Many of us have baggage from our childhood that causes us to self-sabotage things, relationships, and our own happiness.

Those are excuses. Kick them to the curb.

When you feel that doubt, insecurity, or feelings of not being worthy come up, squash them before you finish the sentence. They aren’t true. Then focus on the real truth; that you ARE worth it, and you do deserve to be happy and live an abundant life.

6. Use statements and affirmations to declare what you want to be true

As you’ve hopefully figured out by now, it’s not enough just to hope or think money or other good things are coming your way.

We have to see it, we have to taste it, smell it, and yes, affirm it to the universe.

Now, I won’t lie. Writing down affirmations or (worse) saying them out loud somehow feels cheesy. It makes us somehow feel embarrassed or we think about what others may think about us for doing it.

Now, I don’t suggest stepping onto a crowded plane and proclaiming your abundance loudly for all to hear. But I do want you to tell yourself (quietly and alone if you wish) exactly what you want your life to look like.

Be specific. We never achieve goals if we aren’t clear about what they are.

Also, while it’s ok to set goals and deadlines, don’t proclaim your goals as being at some undefined point in the future. Imagine yourself there now, and talk about that as if it were happening now.

The next step is to bolster your visualization practices with powerful tools like a manifestation journal like this great one on Amazon where you can write down affirmations about what you want to manifest.

Here are some great money affirmations you can start using today!

  • I am worthy of making more money
  • Money flows to me
  • I am prosperous
  • I am aligned with the energy of wealth and abundance
  • My abundance is growing every day
  • I am happy, healthy, and wealthy
  • I deserve to be financially rewarded

If affirmations are new to you, saying these out loud will feel unnatural at first, or maybe even silly. I want to encourage you to push past that and try it. All you have to lose is a lifetime of happiness, wealth, and abundance.

What is the science behind the law of attraction and using it to attract money?

I alluded to this above, but Newton famously said in his Three Laws of Motion “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.”

Do a bad thing, and most likely you’ll find bad things happen to you back. But it works in positive ways too!

In Buddhism and Hinduism, they believe in karma which takes Newton’s theories a little further. Karma, a Sanscrit word, essentially is the law of cause and effect. Every action has a consequence. Now they take it a little further claiming that it’s not only our actions in this lifetime but also previous lifetimes.

But personally, I don’t subscribe to that as if we’re tied to the actions of another in a previous life, what’s the point of trying anything now?

Dr. Richard Davidson of the University of Wisconsin in Madison states that manifesting happiness or physical things like money involves “a physical state of the brain – one that you can induce deliberately.” He believes, after countless hours of studying, that our brains can be rewired as a response to our thoughts, surroundings, and actions.

Now Albert Einstein didn’t exactly profess the law of attraction.

But he did once famously say “A calm and modest life brings more happiness than the pursuit of success with constant restlessness.”

In other words, but staying calm, clear-headed, and positive, we can naturally attract what we want more than going after it in an agitated or negative way.

When we are agitated or restless, as Einstein put it, we are naturally filling our mind (and body) with tension, with doubt, and we are striving to achieve our goals from a place of feeling unfulfilled.

Ultimately, that makes it a lot harder, if not impossible, to achieve our goals.

How limiting beliefs about money stop abundance from coming

Limiting beliefs about money can have a significant impact on one’s financial situation.

Many people have subconscious beliefs about money that can block the flow of abundance into their lives. These beliefs can be formed by past experiences, cultural conditioning, or even family attitudes toward money.

Common limiting beliefs about money include:

  • “Money is the root of all evil.”
  • “I will never be wealthy.”
  • “Money is hard to come by.”
  • “Rich people are selfish and greedy.”

These beliefs can lead to a scarcity mindset, where individuals feel like there is not enough money to go around. This mindset can prevent them from taking risks, making investments, or pursuing opportunities that could lead to financial abundance.

By recognizing and addressing these limiting beliefs, individuals can open themselves up to the possibility of abundance.

This can be done through techniques such as affirmations, visualization, and reframing negative thoughts about money. It is also important to take action toward financial goals and to surround oneself with positive influences and support.

Ultimately, the law of attraction states that what we focus on expands and that our thoughts and beliefs shape our reality. By shifting limiting beliefs about money, individuals can attract more abundance and financial prosperity into their lives.

Can the universe really provide abundance?

The concept of the universe providing abundance is rooted in the law of attraction, which states that we attract what we focus on. Many people believe that the universe can provide abundance in all aspects of life, including financial abundance.

However, it’s important to note that the universe alone cannot provide abundance.

It’s the combination of our thoughts, beliefs, and actions that attract abundance into our lives. We must first believe that we deserve abundance and take action toward our goals. This means having a positive mindset and taking steps toward financial stability, such as setting a budget or seeking out opportunities for growth and success.

It’s also important to acknowledge that financial abundance may look different for everyone. It’s not necessarily about accumulating large sums of money, but rather achieving a sense of financial security and freedom that allows us to live the life we desire.

Ultimately, the universe can provide opportunities for abundance, but it’s up to us to take advantage of them and manifest our desires through our thoughts, beliefs, and actions. By aligning our mindset and actions toward financial abundance, we can create a life of prosperity and fulfillment.

Final thoughts

In this article, we took an in-depth look into the world of manifestation and the law of attraction.

We examined how they work, if they work, and (more importantly), why they work. But we also looked at some of the scientific evidence behind them too, and many are skeptical of what they can’t see and easily prove.

Ultimately, we answered the question does the law of attraction work for money? The answer to that question is most definitely yes.
